Narrative:

Bossier Parish Community College is in compliance with this comprehensive standard because the College actively participates in numerous local, state, regional, and national professional development opportunities that are available to faculty and staff for the enrichment of their research and teaching endeavors. Performance evaluations assist the faculty member with his/her future professional development as well as aid in developing an understanding of how faculty contributions are viewed by students and division chairs. This participation is documented in the annual faculty evaluation process as defined by the Faculty Evaluation Packet Form F and included in the BPCC Annual Report 155-245 by each academic division. The Director of Grants and External Funding provides opportunities for faculty growth and development as indicated in the Academic Affairs Policies and Procedures Manual Professional Growth and Development. Faculty are challenged to participate in academic pursuits in their respective areas of subject matter competence, including the following:

  • Research and publication
  • Membership in professional organizations and societies
  • Attendance and participation in professional organizational meetings relevant to their areas of academic expertise
The Division of Educational Technology provides opportunities for professional growth by offering training in the utilization of the Learning Management System Blackboard. This division also creates presentations for the online environment and for the utilization of the Electronic Discussion Board. Additionally, the division presents afternoon mini-seminars to assist in professional development. The division itself is a resource for maintaining documents and for providing information for professional growth opportunities.

Division chairs encourage faculty development and growth. Each division chair encourages faculty members to create workshops and opportunities for the BPCC faculty. Some examples are as follows:

  • Several faculty in the Telecommunications Division offer programs which include such professional skills as creating PowerPoint presentations, video preparation and preservation, professional ethics, time management, and student advising, blackboard, professional development workshops, meet-up groups, auditions, community/educational involvement, leadership seminars, coaching in performances, and assisting students in seeking jobs.
  • The Educational Technology Division provides all the training in the utilization of the Learning Management System Blackboard, Net-etiquette, Creating presentations for the online environment, Utilization of the Electronic Discussion Board, Brown Bag Blackboard mini seminars, How to prevent cheating in online courses, Utilizing the Blackboard Gradebook, etc.
  • Several faculty in the Liberal Arts Division offer programs for the faculty which include such professional skills as creating power point presentations, voice preparation and preservation, professional ethics, time management, and student advising.
These contributions may be considered in a faculty member's application for promotion. Faculty is also encouraged to attend presentations/seminars either on campus, regionally, or nationally.

In 2005-2006, Bossier Parish Community College spent $24,638.68 for faculty to attend conferences and conventions. This number is significantly reduced because the budget for travel was frozen in September 2005 following the devastation in Louisiana by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. An additional $11,627 for faculty travel for development was provided by grants. In 2004-2005, the College spent $49,142.45 for faculty to attend conferences and conventions. During that academic year, grants provided another $7,552 for faculty travel for professional development activities.

An additional $9456.54 was spent by the College in 2005-2006 to bring faculty development opportunities to the campus. In August 2005, Dr. Ron Baker, the Associate Director of the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, conducted workshops and worked with the individual academic divisions to assist Bossier Parish Community College in its creation of learning outcomes for all courses and programs at the College. Dr. Baker returned to the College in spring 2006 to provide training in assessment strategies to evaluate learning outcomes. During 2004-2005, funds in the amount of $12,277 were used to bring in speakers to introduce the concept of learning outcomes to the faculty and staff. Dr. Cynthia Wilson, a Vice President for the League for Innovation in the Community College, presented a day long workshop on "Learning Centered Education." Next, Dr. Don Prickel from Oregon State University presented "Reconstructing the College Curriculum: A Learner Outcomes Primer." Finally, Dr. Kay McClenney from the University of Texas at Austin presented "Student Success Through Student Engagement."

The Bossier Parish Community College Foundation allocates funds each fiscal year for faculty professional development. In the past, these funds have been used to send faculty members to conferences and continuing education workshops to enhance instruction in the classroom. For example, several faculty members were able to attend the Learning Styles Institute in New York, and Allied Health instructors have been able to attend seminars as part of their certification. In order to qualify for these monies, faculty members must hold current Faculty Senate membership and have made a contribution to the Foundation during that same fiscal year. At the beginning of each semester, Faculty Senate calls for submissions. The Faculty Senate Executive Committee then reviews the submissions, approves/disapproves them, and ranks them. Once the faculty member has attended the faculty development event, he/she is reimbursed by the Foundation for approved expenses.

Each year the Chancellor may select two individuals, a faculty member and a staff member, to attend the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Leadership Development Institute (LCTCS LDI). The Leadership Development Institute is a year-long professional development opportunity for the faculty member to develop leadership skills and network with other LCTCS LDI participants.

While faculty development is reported both in the faculty member's annual evaluation and in the Annual Report 155-245, a table showing faculty development activities for 2005-2006 is presented as documentation.

Bossier Parish Community College provides ongoing professional development of faculty as teachers, scholars, and practitioners. The College encourages faculty professional development as an element of its yearly Faculty Evaluation plan and sponsors on-going opportunities for faculty education. The College Foundation allocates funds each year for faculty to attend professional conferences and workshops. Whether through on-campus or off-campus opportunities, the College encourages faculty members to broaden their knowledge-base and to seek out new ideas in an effort to improve the classroom experience.
