Bossier Parish Community College is in compliance with this comprehensive standard because the College is committed to the principle of academic freedom. The College believes that academic freedom is invaluable for the faculty to maintain the high standards of instruction that reflect the College's vision for excellence in education which meets or exceeds criteria set forth by COC/SACS and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS).
The Faculty Handbook 28 and the Academic Affairs Policies and Procedure Manual describe the freedom accorded faculty members in their teaching, research, and publication as well as the College's expectation of them. Faculty members are free to present relevant material in the classroom without prior censorship, but all faculty members are expected to recognize the inherent responsibility in teaching and service as stated in their annual employment contracts. The privilege of academic freedom is that of refraining from insisting upon the students adopting any particular point of view as authoritative.
The policy also includes the right of a faculty member to exercise in speaking, writing, and action outside the College the ordinary rights of the American citizen, but the principle does not decrease the responsibility and accountability which the member of the academic staff bears to the College, the state, and the nation.
As a means of protecting academic freedom, the College has a grievance system as stated in the Human Resource Manual 5-11. The Grievances Procedures provide a mechanism to ensure systematic and orderly methods of providing fair and impartial procedures for legitimate faculty grievances.
The College policy on academic freedom and the Grievances Procedures are in accordance with Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS) Policy #1.038, Section A which addresses academic freedom and the Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS) Policy #6.015 which concerns Grievance Procedures set forth by the LCTCS Governing Board.
