Bossier Parish Community College is in compliance with this comprehensive standard because the College provides thorough and timely instruction in the use of the Library and other learning and information resources through an array of learning and information dissemination techniques. The Library and other learning resource units of Bossier Parish Community College are defined as the Library, Technology Resource Center, Learning Center, and Educational Technology Division.
The mission of the College is supported with the availability of information resources for on-campus and off-campus use, computers, online resources, multimedia classrooms, study rooms, tutors, and a new Library facility that opened with the new campus in January 2005.
Library orientation sessions are offered for students when requested by instructors, or sessions can be scheduled individually by interested students. These sessions can be conducted in the classroom with PowerPoint demonstrations or as a guided tour of the Library. Classes using the Library's resources after an orientation session are given a student survey to evaluate the Library's resources and services. Individual suggestions given by students completing the surveys are compiled and addressed by librarians at their annual planning session. Improvements made from past evaluations include adding more computers and purchasing a scanner for student use, providing wireless access, purchasing more fiction, and providing quiet zones. In addition, a Library liaison is appointed to each academic division to encourage student, faculty, and staff use of the Library.
The Library's Need Help? website page provides an online starting point for research or assistance. Reference assistance is available by phone or through email. Online library tutorials provide a section for Library orientation, as well as tutorials on finding library materials or articles and a research guide for English classes.
The Library's Technology Resource Center (TRC), housing 56 computers, makes it possible for students without a personal computer or away from their own computer to complete assigned work, do online research, or access and use the College website as needed. Staffed by a manager and student workers, the TRC does not provide instruction on how to use a computer or the software on the computers, but the personnel do assist students when needed. Courses on the use of computer hardware and software are readily available for academic credit, as well as noncredit courses through Community Education.
The Learning Center enhances instruction provided in the classroom and assists students in achieving academic success. The Center is conveniently located next to the Library and the TRC; the Center is handicapped accessible and open six days a week. The Learning Center offers free, individualized peer tutoring in math, science, reading, writing, accounting, English, and more. The Center allows for programmed instruction, including Blackboard, on 43 computers for student use. In addition, there is a large collection of videotapes and supplemental material for free check-out and equipment such as graphing calculators, tape recorders, microscopes, anatomical models, and a CPR manikin available for in-house use.
Within the LCTC System, the College's Division of Educational Technology is most closely aligned with peer colleges Delgado Community College and Baton Rouge Community College in the area of distance learning. The College, like the aforementioned institutions, uses the Blackboard method of online delivery and compressed video learning.
The Division provides convenient access to instruction for all online courses through a comprehensive program of services available to all currently enrolled students. The Division of Educational Technology has an online 24/7 helpline support center, which provides a list of current Blackboard instructors, Blackboard students, the Academic Calendar, and general questions about the College. Questions about the process of online learning and FAQs pertaining to that subject are also provided. On the same website, an interactive evaluation is provided with a Blackboard capability assessment page which features an animated tutorial to guide users with specific course tools, to live chat with a service representative over the web, and to provide a knowledge base for a variety of solutions.
Additionally, the Division has instituted SMARTHINKING, a live, online, personalized learning tool in math, writing, business, and chemistry. By logging on to SMARTHINKING, students may submit writing assignments to be evaluated, or submit a math or science question and receive feedback from a tutor, usually within 24 hours.
Bossier Parish Community College ensures that users have access to regular and timely instruction in the use of the library and other learning/information resources through an array of dissemination techniques. The Library offers orientation sessions, reference assistance, online tutorials, and website help, and these function to guide and assist users. The College Learning Center further enhances classroom instruction and assists in the use of learning and information resources. The Division of Educational Technology provides course support for online classes and has instituted SMARTHINKING for all students and faculty, to expand tutoring and support to those outside the bounds of the campus. In its determination to encourage and facilitate academic success, the institution strives to promote a number of venues whereby users may access appropriate instruction and resources.
