Objective:
To prepare students to give emergency care to victims of accidents or medical emergencies in pre-hospital environments and to perform advanced-level invasive procedures under the direction of an emergency room physician.
Specific Degree Requirements:
Students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in EMT: Paramedic must first meet College admission requirements. State and national certification in EMT: Basic must be obtained prior to admission to the BPCC Paramedic portion of the program. It is suggested that students have one year of experience as an EMT: Basic prior to beginning paramedic training. Upon completion of qualification courses with a "C" or higher, students may apply for Paramedic training. Admission to the Paramedic portion of the program is competitive. Students applying for Paramedic training must submit a current health status statement from a physician, laboratory immunization/testing reports, proof of Hepatitis B, varicella zoster immunization, other required immunizations, and current health insurance coverage. Students must pass a drug-screening test. Additional Bureau of EMS requirements may apply.
Paramedic training is offered as both a day and evening program. Paramedic training is intensive, involving over 1,000 hours of didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field training.
Advanced standing and articulation into specific EMTP courses may be granted to students who have completed Paramedic training at Louisiana Technical College or another accredited institution. Documentation confirming current certification as a Paramedic from the National Registry of EMT and state certification must be provided.
The last 12 academic credit hours must be completed in residence at BPCC to receive a degree form Bossier Parish Community College.
