Division of Accelerated Learning

Mission Statement

The mission of the Division for Accelerated Learning at Bossier Parish Community College is to contribute efforts that increase the educational attainment levels of adults in Louisiana. The Division of Accelerated Learning develops and provides learning-focused, student-centered, and market-responsive academic certificates and degree programs. Our innovative solutions increase access to educational opportunities in accelerated formats on campus and online that are convenient, flexible, and highly personalized to meet the needs of the adult learner. The Division provides a structure for the academic success and credential attainment of adult learners leading to preparation for advancement into high-skill positions. Furthermore, the Division advocates the creation and implementation of adult-friendly institutional policies and student support services.

Major Program Goals:

  1. To increase enrollments in accelerated programs (online, hybrid, and evening/weekend face-to-face).
  2. To achieve a graduation rate of 50% in accelerated programs through increased learner-centered support and retention services.

BPCC Programs Offered in an Accelerated Format:

Currently the Division offers the same programs as those offered in other academic divisions, yet courses are taught online and in accelerated 4-week and 8-week formats. The Division will be creating one new academic degree program beginning in the 2009-2010 academic year as well as researching new program ideas.

Prior Learning Assessment

Prior Learning Assessment through portfolio evaluation is housed within the Division of Accelerated Learning. Bossier Parish Community College has created a process by which a student will learn to create and submit a portfolio for assessment to determine if course credit will be awarded for college level learning has been acquired through work, volunteer, or other life experiences. Resources:

Portfolio 101 Workshop. This workshop lasts 8 weeks and is offered in a hybrid (online and face-to-face) format. The fee is $50. Email priorlearning@bpcc.edu or call 318-678-6050 for more information.

Transcript Evaluation. The Accelerated Learning faculty and staff provide unofficial transcript evaluations to help adults determine how much credit may be used in an accelerated degree program at BPCC.
