The 1970s


1973

Dr. Douglas PetersonThe name of the school was established as Bossier Parish Community College.

In the fall, academic course offerings, which were expanded in both the day and evening divisions, now provided special courses designed for persons representing the business, industrial, and military communities.

Enrollment increases to 534.

 

Dr. Douglas Peterson is named Chancellor and serves from 1973 to 1988.

 

 

 


1974

Registration

 

Record-breaking Fall enrollment of 1100 – making BPCC the second largest higher education institution in the Shreveport/Bossier City area.

 

 

 

First summer semester offered.  Estimated cost (fees and books) $50 - 100 per semester.


1975

Regional science fair sponsored by BPCC established.


1976

First issue of college newspaper Kaleidoscope published.


1977

David Horner and Jerry Slack, art professors, create BPCC’s logo. BPCC Logo

Community Education Division is established with 21 non-academic courses and 533 students. Carol Waggoner, director.

Police Training Academy

 

 

The Northwest Louisiana Police Training Academy established to provide officer training and retraining in ten northwest Louisiana parishes. (Renamed the Criminal Justice Institute in 1984.)

 

 

 


1978

College is authorized to grant associate degrees in occupational studies (House bill #1163)

The Respiratory Therapy Technology program was established.


1979

Two-year degrees were established in criminal justice, business administration, and office administration.
