Add Item

Adding an Item in your course is the core function of building an online course. This is the place to add outlines, narratives, attachments, etc. This topic will address the function and options available when adding an Item.

1 Content Information

Name: Enter the name of the item. Be descriptive. This will be visible to the student as a link to your content. You may what to change the color of the name to match other items that are similar.

Text: You will enter our course content here! Type in the information you want to present to your students. Use the formatting option to emphasize selected parts of you content.

Text Box

You can also add graphics and media to your content using these options.

NOTE: If you plan to paste information from a Word document into this Text box. First visit the Pasting MS Word into Blackboard topic in Best Practices.

2 Content

Files, such as Word documents and PowerPoint can also be attached to this Item. Files are limited by their size (5mb). Also, not all files are recognized by Blackboard. If you have trouble uploading a file because of its size or file type, contact BPCC’s Blackboard Administrator.

Attach local file: Select Browse to locate the file to be uploaded to Blackboard.

Name of Link to File: Enter the name of the link that users click to access the attached file. (Example of name: Click here to open <file name>)

Special Action: This is used with compressed files such as a .zip file.

3 Options

Make the content available: Select Yes to make this item available to students.

Track number of views: Select Yes if you want to track students that have visited this item. To view these Statistics, next to the Item, click on Manage and then Statistics Tracking.

Choose date and time restrictions: The date the item will be available can be selected here or if this item is in a Folder or Learning Unit, the dates can be selected there to make available all items within that Folder or Learning Unit.

Display After: Select the date and time when this Item will become available to Students. This field is optional; the Instructor may control availability through the Make the link available option without setting specific dates.

BPCC Recommendation: Please do not select 12:00 am or 12:00pm. This has been a large source of confusion for many students and faculty. Using 11:55 or 12:05 in place of 12:00 seems to eliminate most of the confusion.

Display Until: Select the date and time the Item will be made unavailable to Students. This field may be left blank.
