Dean's Message
Are books passé? Have memory sticks outpaced library stacks? Are libraries now just for social networking? Some say libraries are obsolete, part of the past. But that statement is simply untrue.

Today libraries are enjoying a golden age, flourishing not only in the confines of a building, but also in the continuously expanding Internet universe. In the United States, 2 billion items were checked out last year with nearly 1.8 billion visitors annually. The age of technology is not threatening our libraries, but complementing our services and expanding our reach.

The BPCC Library is about information and data sharing and community. The Library provides a gathering place for faculty, staff, and students, complete with trained informational professionals—called librarians—who foster inquiry and assist with the interpretation of information both onsite and online.

National Library Week is April 15-21. This is a time when all types of libraries and the people who use them celebrate the contributions of all libraries, librarians, and library workers in our schools and communities and on campuses. Come help the BPCC Library celebrate. Visit the Library. Join our community. "Come together @ your library."

Community Service
Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana
The BPCC Library is proud to have selected such a worthy cause for our Community Service project this academic year. The Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana is an all volunteer organization established to address the concerns and needs of animals in our area. We have volunteered community services hours at pet adoptions and rabies clinic. In addition, we have recycled over $50 in aluminum cans and collected used newspapers. This has been a great opportunity to serve the community and represent BPCC.

Northwest Louisiana Food Bank
The BPCC Library sponsored our annual Fall Food Drive in November and December 2006 collecting a total of 3,800 lbs. of food. The response campuswide was generous. Building G won the 1st place award in the competition between the buildings. We thank everyone that helped make this a big success. All donations went to the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank. What a great way to help our community!

Research Tip: OneSearch
Try the library’s OneSearch feature for your research. OneSearch searches our online catalog and multiple databases at the same time. This helps you locate materials that we have in the library and articles that are in the databases with one search. The online catalog, databases, and OneSearch are available through the BPCC Library website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

WIFI Access in the Library
We are Wireless! The BPCC Library now offers wireless Internet access to current students. Students are welcome to connect to the WIFI with a personal laptop. They may also check out a Library wireless laptop for use in the Library. Wireless access for BPCC faculty and staff is now available.

eBooks at the Library
E-Books (full-text electronic books) are ready for use through the Library's Online Catalog. The entire content of the eBook may be viewed online; additionally, pages may be printed a page or two at a time. Currently, the eBook collection includes business; the Library is working to acquire other subject areas.

Library Database Spotlight
EBSCO Literary Reference Center assists undergraduate English and Humanities students by providing full-text articles from Masterplots, reference books, literary criticisms, book reviews, interviews, and periodicals. It is available through the BPCC Library web site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Librarians are available to assist with questions and the database offers a "Help" page with tutorials and user guides.

Study Rooms
Looking for a quiet place to study or need to meet with a small group? The Library has three study rooms located on the second floor that accommodate up to six people. All rooms are equipped with a TV/VCR combination. To reserve one of the rooms, present your current BPCC ID at the circulation desk. Rooms may be reserved for two hours at a time. You may request the room for an additional two hours provided no one is waiting. So, the next time you’re looking for a place to study, checkout our study rooms.

BPCC Celebrates 40 Years
For the 2007-2008 academic year the Library is dedicating its exhibit space to showcase individual academic divisions. The exhibit will highlight each division’s growth from the beginning of the college to today. We hope to include memories of faculty and staff both past and present. Each exhibit will be accented with photographs and mementos of the rich history of our college. It is a great chance to show our students just how far the college has come.

Journals and Magazines in the Library
Need to do a report or research a current topic and the information must come from a professional journal? Got time between classes and would like to do some leisure reading? The Library is your place to be. Over 200 journals and magazines including daily newspapers are housed for your convenience on the second floor. Journals are located on the magazine shelves in alphabetical order. The most recent issues are on display and back issues for the year are located underneath the shelves. Issues older than a year can be found in the magazine archives and can be easily assessed. Start taking advantage of another service that the Library has to offer. It will make your day a little brighter.

BPCC’s Campus Wide Identification
Remember that the CWID card is necessary for many services in the Library. A current BPCC ID is REQUIRED to use the TRC, check out books, or use reserve materials.
