Biology (BLGY)

101/101L:
General Biology I. (4-3-3)
Introduction to the basic principles of biology for the science major. Topics include a short history of biology, scientific method, basic chemistry of life, cell structure and function, photosynthesis, cell respiration, cell reproduction, genetics, evolution and ecology. Laboratory activities reinforce lecture.
102/102L:
General Biology II. (4-3-3)
Prerequisite: BLGY 101.
A sequence course for Biology 101. The course topics include classification, survey of the major phyla of organisms and the structure and physiology of the systems of plants and animals. The laboratory portion enhances the understanding of the lecture.
105:
Elements of Biology. (3-3-0)
An introductory course of biology for non-science majors. Includes a survey of the basic concepts and principles that control the functioning of all living organisms.
106:
Environmental Science. (3-3-0)
This course, for non-science majors, provides a sequence lecture course for Biology 105. Includes a survey of basic concepts and principles of ecology and environmental science, with emphasis on interaction of and impact on living systems, especially humans and their environments.
113:
Consumer Nutrition. (3-3-0)
A nutrition course for the non-science major which introduces the student to the basic nutrients required by the body and how they are utilized. This course helps the student to evaluate nutrition information and to apply it to daily life.
201:
General Botany. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: BLGY 101/BLGY101L.
An introduction to the anatomy, physiology, classification, and evolution of photosynthetic protists, higher plants, and fungi.
201L:
General Botany Laboratory. (1-0-3)
Corequisite: Enrollment in BLGY 201.
This course includes laboratory exercises to accompany and reinforce BLGY 201 lecture concepts.
203:
Basic Nutrition. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: ZLGY 110 or ZLGY 124 or BLGY 101.
Fundamental principles of nutrition with an emphasis on underlying physiological processes and with application to health and physical fitness.
