Medical Office Specialist (MOS)

106:
Medical Transcription. (3-2-3)
Corequisite or Prerequisite: CIS 105 and ZLGY 110.
Review of medical terminology, the study of model reports, and the use of computers to transcribe medical reports.
110/110L:
Medical Coding I/Laboratory. (4-3-3)
Prerequisite: ALHT 114.
ICD-9-CM coding and classification systems to assign valid diagnostic and/or procedure codes. The laboratory serves to reinforce lecture material and provides practical application and practice in coding.
111/111L:
Medical Coding II/Laboratory. (4-3-3)
Prerequisite: MOS 110, and acceptance into the Medical Office Specialist Clinical program.
Understanding and use of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding and classification systems in the assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes. This course is a continuation of MOS 110. The laboratory component reinforces lecture and includes practice in coding in-patient and out-patient records.
113:
Reimbursement Methodology. (3-3-0)
Corequisite: MOS 111.
The use of coded data and health information in reimbursement and payment systems utilized in health care settings and managed care. The course will review prospective payment systems, third party payers, billing and insurance procedures, explanation of benefits statements, peer review organizations, managed care, and compliance issues.
114:
Medical Transcription Practicum. (2 hrs. credit)
Corequisite or prerequisite: MOS 216.
Supervised on-the-job experience performing medical transcription and other related medical office duties in a health care facility. A minimum of 100 hours of practical experience will be required. This class will require students to be available for assignments in health care facilities Monday through Friday for up to 8 hours per day.
116:
Medical Coding Practicum. (2 hrs. credit)
Corequisite or prerequisite: MOS 11I and MOS 113.
Supervised on-the-job experience performing medical coding and other related medical office duties in a health care facility. A minimum of 100 hours of practical experience will be required. This class will require students to be available for assignments in health care facilities Monday through Friday for up to 8 hours per day.
206:
Medical Office Procedures. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: CIS 105.
Knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently manage a medical office.
206L:
Medical Office Procedures Laboratory (1-0-3)
Corequisite: MOS 206.
Application and practice of concepts of management of the medical office.
216:
Advanced Medical Transcription. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: MOS 106.
Transcription of advanced original health care dictation using advanced proofreading, editing and research skills while requiring progressively demanding accuracy and
productivity standards.
216L:
Advanced Medical Transcription Laboratory. (2-0-6)
Corequisite: MOS 216.
This laboratory exercises are used to reinforce lecture material through the use of health care dictation by dictators with varying accents and dialects representing varying medical specialties.
