Medical Office Specialist
Technical Diploma

Concentrations: Medical Coding or Medical Transcription

The Medical Office Specialist Program prepares students to work in a variety of health care settings as medical coders or medical transcriptionists.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Technical Diploma in Medical Office Specialist will have demonstrated:

  1. ability to accurately communicate with members of the health care team using effective verbal and written communication while maintaining patient confidentiality and with regard to policies and procedures regulating documentation and reporting of medical information;
  2. ability to critically analyze written and verbal medical information in order to accurately assign medical codes and transcribe medical records;
  3. application of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology concept to the skills of an entry level medical coder or medical transcriptionist; and
  4. utilization of computer technology to translate written medical information into a numeric code using established coding rules and guidelines and/or converting verbal dictated medical information into a typed format.

Specific Requirements:

Students pursuing a Medical Office Specialist Technical Diploma must first meet College admission requirements. Upon the successful completion (minimum of "C") of qualification courses, submission of a program application, 3 academic rating forms (references), and satisfactory Work Keys Assessment scores (Applied Math—3; Location Information—4; Reading for Information—5), a student may interview for clinical training. Clinical classes are selected in the fall of each year. Up to fifteen (15) students are selected for each (Medical Coding and Medical Transcription) clinical class.

Students selected for the Medical Office Specialist program must maintain a minimum grade of "C" or better in all clinical course work in order to remain in the program. Any student who fails to earn a "C" or higher in clinical course work will be terminated from the program. The student may reapply and re-interview for the next clinical class the following year if he/she wishes to pursue the Medical Office Specialist Technical Diploma. If readmitted the student will have to repeat all clinical classes.

Before beginning clinical classes, students must test out of READ 099, into ENGL 101, and into MATH 099 as documented by ACT, placement test, or course completion.

Students must submit all Required Information for Clinical Programs (described earlier). Students enrolled in concentration classes must pay a clinical fee in addition to regular tuition.

Students enrolled in the Medical Office Specialists program must take ALHT 114 and MOS 110 concurrently.
