Pharmacy Technician Associate of Applied Science and Certificate of Technical Studies
The Pharmacy Technician Program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as a pharmacy technician under the supervision of licensed pharmacists in various types of pharmacies. College-ready students can complete the Certificate of Technical Studies in Pharmacy Technician in two semesters. With additional course work, students can earn the Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician.
The Bossier Parish Community College Pharmacy Technician program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacist (ASHP) and approved by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy (LABP).
Learning Outcomes:
Recipients of the Certificate of Technical Studies and Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician will be able to demonstrate:
- utilization of current computer software and technology to communicate, gather data and produce documents in the operation of a pharmacy;
- use of effective written, verbal, and graphic skills to communicate and interact with a diverse population of healthcare professionals and patients;
- creation of pharmaceutical products using appropriate techniques and skills within accepted guidelines and laws;
- performance of mathematical calculations necessary for the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical products; and
- application of scientific concepts of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to the skills of the pharmacy technician.
Specific Degree Requirements:
Students pursuing a Pharmacy Technician certificate or degree must first meet College admission requirements. Upon the successful completion (minimum of “C”) or current enrollment in all qualification courses, a student may apply for admission to program courses. To be considered for admission to the program courses, a completed application packet must be submitted no later than the end of the fourth week of the semester during which the student is enrolled in PHAR 102 and PHAR 104. Selection into program courses is competitive and is based on:
- Grade point average
- Two academic rating forms (references) scores
- Interview evaluation by selection committee
To be eligible for enrollment in program courses, the student must have successfully applied for a Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration no later than the date established by the program. Additionally, the student must have submitted all required information for programs with a clinical component (described earlier in this section).
Prior to beginning the Pharmacy Clinical Practice Course (PHAR 151), the Pharmacy Technician Program Director must be in receipt of a copy of the student’s current Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration form. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate is eligible to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) given by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
