Course Descriptions

Construction (CONS)

101:
Materials and Methods I (3-3-0)
Corequisite or prerequisite: MATH 099.
The properties of most common construction materials are covered along with calculation methods for determining the suitability of materials for given applications. Properties covered include loads and load resistance; thermal; air and water vapor flow; fire-related; acoustical; expansion and contraction; and sustainable construction. A general overview of the construction process is also provided.
102:
Materials and Methods II (3-2-3)
Corequisite or prerequisite: CONS 101 or permission of instructor, MATH 129 or MATH 102.
Detailed coverage of common methods of commercial and residential construction is provided including: site layout and preparation, foundation, structural, exterior finishes (walls, openings, roofs), interior systems (insulation, finishes and lighting) and engineered systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and sustainability). Special emphasis is placed on safety, modern tools and equipment. The lab provides opportunities for hands-on practice of the learned methods.

Construction Safety and the OSHA Standards (3-3-0)
Corequisite or prerequisite: CONS 101 or permission of instructor.
A straightforward presentation of material which makes the theories and principles of construction safety practical and useful in real-world settings is covered in this course. Special emphasis is placed on the needs of modern construction professionals. Various safety tools and apparatus are examined and training is provided in their use. The complete text of the 30-hour (Occupational Safety & Health Act) OSHA Construction Certification is presented and students are offered an option to complete the testing for the certification during the course.

OSHA 30 Hour Construction Safety (2-2-0)
Corequisite or prerequisite: CONS 101 or permission of instructor.

Construction Contracting and Laws (3-3-0)
Corequisite or prerequisite: CONS 101.
Contractual obligations for construction project delivery, contract hierarchies, and contract types will be examined. Bid systems will be covered. The course emphasizes the more common case law holdings and industry customs that help avoid troublesome legal issues during the completion of a project. Regulatory issues--such as codes, code compliance, zoning and inspections--are explained. Red flag issues are explored.
160:
Construction Graphics and Specifications (3-3-0)
Corequisite or prerequisite: MATH 129 or MATH 102.
This course provides construction graphics interpretation experience in residential and small commercial construction. Understanding the procedure by which the views are produced, the scale factor of the replication, and the detailing of the project is primary. In addition, graphic symbols, annotation and dimensioning are explained. Both schedules and specifications are covered in detail. Students create and review drawings in order to understand the nomenclature of construction graphics.

Sustainable Construction Science (3-3-0)
Prerequisites: CONS 101 and either MATH 129 or MATH 102.
Focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable materials, environmental impact and indoor air quality, this course will introduce students to the technologies of sustainable construction. Impacts of sustainable construction studied will include changes to the building process, verification and reporting, and meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their needs.

Construction Surveying and Laboratory (3-2-3)
Corequisite or prerequisite: MATH 129 or MATH 112.
This course covers the fundamentals of plan surveying. It covers accurate measuring of distance, theory and practice of leveling, angles and theodolites, basic operations of total stations, traverse surveys and computations, branches of geomatics, global positioning systems, and control surveys. Field work will approximate industrial practice, with stress on degrees of precision required in surveying practice.
220:
Construction Estimating (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: MATH 129 or MATH 102 and CONS 160 and CIS 105, or permission of instructor.
Instruction in material quantity survey, converting the material quantities to monetary values, and adding the cost of labor and equipment is provided. Students are instructed in the application of overhead and profit to produce a total monetary estimate for bid preparation. Manual estimating is emphasized initially so that students can learn the steps for proper estimating and how the estimate is applied to the bidding process, the contract, and the construction project delivery. Computerized estimating programs are practiced, and their use for estimating and scheduling is discussed.

Construction Estimating Laboratory (1-0-3)
Prerequisite/ Corequisite: CONS 220.
Practice of computer-based construction estimating procedures using iterative processes to determine alternate and best results.
230:
Statics and Strengths of Materials and Lab (3-2-2)
Prerequisites: CONS 101, CONS 102 and MATH 112.
Resolution of forces, equilibrium, application of statics for simple structures, centroids, moments of inertia; materials in tension, compression, bending; shear and moment diagrams; design of simple structures using materials with varying structural properties.
250:
Construction Management (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: CONS 160, CONS 220, and CIS 105, or permission of instructor.
This course covers the responsibilities and duties of the project manager, field superintendent, and building contractor. Management decisions and documentation related to organization, synchronization, and cost control of construction activities are explained. An overview of computer-based applications related to construction management, scheduling and expediting, and practice using these applications is provided.
250L:
Construction Management Laboratory (1-0-3)
Prerequisite or Corequisite: CONS 250.
In a computer laboratory setting, students will manage a theoretical construction project from contract award to post-completion. Emphasis will be on construction planning and scheduling using the CPM method. All documents will be prepared, accounting functions performed, and student success will be measured by the management decisions made and the consequences of these decisions.
251:
Advanced Construction Management (2-2-0)
Prerequisite: CONS 250 and CIS 105, or permission of instructor.
A seminar course covering the real-world applications of construction management training. Visiting instructors and round-table discussions with industry professionals will provide research background for the preparation of an investigational report. Report findings will be shared with other program participants and the mentors.
260:
Construction Mentorship (1-1-0)
Prerequisites: CONS 250 and CIS 105, or permission of instructor.
To facilitate the individual study of a field of interest, this course will present material specific to the particular topics which augment the student's understanding and approach to career choices in construction management. Industry mentors will meet with the students bi-weekly for eleven months to discuss the issues which can help the student achieve career goals. Students will research the topics discussed with the mentors and prepare a presentation based upon that research to be shared with other program participants and the mentors.
270:
Contractors Licensing Preparation (1-1-0)
Pre-corequisite: CONS 250, CONS 251 and Prerequisite: CIS 105, or permission of instructor.
This course will aid students with state licensing exam preparation, utilizing practice tests, classroom instruction, and test preparation software. Students will prepare for the course for a full semester with independent study and will attend the seminar for three days of intense preparation.
280:
Construction Management Internship (3-0-15)
Prerequisite or Corequisite: CONS 250.
Designed as a shadowing experience, students will work under the direct supervision of a Construction Manager learning first-hand the day-to-day challenges of managing a construction project both in the field and in the office. Students will prepare and annotate a Construction Log of the activities of the project, and success in the course will be based upon the annotated Log and the supervising manager's evaluation.
