Physical Science (PHSC)
- Elemental Physics. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: MATH 098 or ACT math score of 18 or higher.
Introductory physics course, which includes basic concepts in motion, gravitation, energy transformation, heat, waves, sound and electricity. Graphic and algebraic solutions
in problem solving are emphasized.
- Elemental Physics Laboratory. (1-0-3)
Prerequisite: Previous credit or current enrollment in PHSC 105.
Laboratory exercises that support and reinforce concepts taught in PHSC 105.
- Elemental Chemistry. (3-3-0)
Prerequisite: MATH 098 or ACT math score of 16 or higher.
An introduction to chemistry through its role and practical applications in society. Foundations of chemistry will be presented including environmental, medical, industrial, and other scientific topics and case studies. Designed for non-science majors with a minimal background in chemistry. This course will also focus on improving the student's ability to understand and communicate scientific topics as an informed citizen.
- Environmental Science. (3-3-0)
This course includes a study of basic concepts and principles of ecology and environmental science, with emphasis on interaction of an impact on living systems, especially humans and their environment. This course is also listed as BLGY 107. Students cannot receive credit for both PHSC 107 and BLGY 107.
- Astronomy. (3-3-0)
A non-mathematical, descriptive introduction to astronomy, including historical perspectives and modern concepts of our solar system, comets, constellations, stars, galaxies, pulsars, black holes, and other bodies.
- Physical Geology (3-3-0)
A descriptive, non-mathematical introduction to physical geology. Concepts covered will include an introduction to the origin of the earth, its composition, structure and dynamic nature. Areas of concentration include: mineral/rock formation and composition, weathering and erosion processes, plate tectonic theory, and an appreciation for the geologic time scales associated with the formation of the earth's topography, including mountain formation, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the ocean floor. Additionally, the availability and extraction of the earth's natural resources, and the environmental effects thereof, will be discussed.
