Biotechnology (BIOT)

103:
Survey of Biotechnology. (4-3-3)
This course introduces the disciplines and techniques of biotechnology. Basic biological concepts and current molecular techniques are developed and explored through didactic and laboratory activities. Career pathways and biotechnology products are highlighted.
104:
Technical Computations. (3-3-0)
This course is designed to provide students with applied mathematical skills required in technical laboratories to performs tasks such as preparing laboratory reagents and solutions, making dilutions, and graphing and analyzing data sets.
201:
Laboratory Skills and Concepts. (3-2-4)
Prerequisites: CHEM 101 or CHEM 107 and BIOT 104.
In this laboratory-intensive course, students gain an appreciation for the uses of biotechnology. Students will validate and use laboratory equipment and will explore quality systems, laboratory safety, and data management. Good laboratory practice and good manufacturing practices will be emphasized.
202:
Cell Culture Techniques. (3-2-4)
Prerequisites: MICR 110 or MICR 206 or consent of instructor.
Students will gain an appreciation for safety and asepsis required in the cell culture laboratory. Primary and continuous cultures will be studied to understand nutrient and environmental requirements for growth. Students will use established methods of cell maintenance, counting, splitting and storage to explore cellular functions and uses for cultured cells.
204:
Molecular Biotechnology. (4-2-6)
Prerequisites: BIOT 201 and MICR 110 or MICR 206.
Molecular techniques to explore the interactions between DNA, RNA, and protein. Topics of study include recombinant and transgenic organisms, cloning, and genetically modified foods.
205:
Biotechnology Internship. (4 hrs. credit)
Prerequisite: BIOT 204.
Work under the direction of a research or laboratory scientist for a minimum of 180 hours. One week will be spent in class discussions and presentations of research bench work conducted by each student.
