Certificate of Technical Studies in Pharmacy Technician and Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as a pharmacy technician under the supervision of licensed pharmacists in various types of pharmacies. College-ready students can complete the Certificate of Technical Studies in Pharmacy Technician in two semesters. With additional course work, students can earn the Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician.

The Bossier Parish Community College Pharmacy Technician program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and approved by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy (LABP).

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Certificate of Technical Studies and Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician will be able to demonstrate:

  1. utilization of current computer software and technology to communicate, gather data and produce documents in the operation of a pharmacy and maintain currency within the profession;
  2. use of effective written, verbal, and graphic skills to communicate and interact with a diverse population of healthcare professionals and patients;
  3. utilization of critical thinking to create pharmaceutical products using appropriate techniques and skills within accepted guidelines and laws
  4. performance of mathematical calculations necessary for the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical products; and
  5. application of scientific concepts of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to the skills of the pharmacy technician.

Admissions Policy

Students wishing to enroll in the BPCC Pharmacy Technician Program must be currently admitted to Bossier Parish Community College and have a high school diploma or Louisiana High School Equivalency. Student who have met the required Compass score for the placement test, or successfully completed, with a “C” or better, the courses of Math 097 and Read 099 are eligible to enroll in qualification courses for the pharmacy technician program. Students enrolling in PHAR 102 and PHAR 104 must be concurrently enrolled in or have successfully completed all program qualification courses.

Specific Degree Requirements:

Upon the successful completion (minimum of “C”) or current enrollment in all qualification courses, a student may apply for admission to program-specific courses, PHAR 110, PHAR 120 and PHAR 151. Enrollment in these courses is limited to 20 students per semester. To be considered for admission to the program-specific courses, a completed application packet must be submitted no later than the end of the fourth week of the semester during which the student is enrolled in PHAR 102 and PHAR 104. Selection into program courses is competitive and is based on:

  • Grade point average of 2.0 or greater
  • One academic or employer rating form (reference) score
  • Interview evaluation by selection committee

To be eligible for enrollment in program courses, PHAR 110, 120, and 151, the student must have successfully applied for a Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration no later than the date established by the program director. In order to apply, the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy requires that the student have a high school diploma or Louisiana High School Equivalency. Additionally, the student must have submitted all required information for programs with a clinical component (described earlier in this section).

Prior to beginning the Pharmacy Clinical Practice Course (PHAR 151), the Pharmacy Technician Program Director must be in receipt of a copy of the student’s current Pharmacy Technician Candidate Registration form. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate is eligible to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) given by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

BPCC Pharmacy Technician Program Completion Policy:

Students may earn a Certificate of Technical Studies in Pharmacy Technician or an Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician at Bossier Parish Community College. To complete the program, students must be at least 18 years of age, meet all educational goals and objectives of the program, and show a consistently high level of technician candidate practice during clinical rotations at pharmacies. Students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all required courses and have completed all required evaluations and certifications. Students are required to complete 400 hours of clinical work at assigned pharmacies and submit documentation of completion. Students must meet all graduation requirements set forth by Bossier Parish Community College, the American Society of Health System Pharmacist (ASHP) and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

*For transfer to a four year institution, students are strongly advised to take MATH 102 instead of MATH 101. Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriated mathematics course.

Students receiving the Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician from Bossier Parish Community College may transfer their courses to partially fulfill degree requirements at Northwestern State University to satisfy requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Allied Health.
