What is counseling?

Counseling is a collaborative process in which clients are assisted in defining their goals and making decisions. It is a guided process toward positive life-affirming change. The counselor acts as a facilitator and is committed to helping you in this process.


Why do students come for counseling?

Common reasons why students come to the Counseling Center include:

Who are the counselors?

The counselors are master's level mental health professionals who are licensed by the State of Louisiana as licensed professional counselors and marriage and family therapists. They are competent and caring people who are interested in helping students achieve well being and personal progress. You can learn more about our staff by clicking here.


Am I eligible?

Counseling services are provided at no charge to any full-time or part-time student currently enrolled at Bossier Parish Community College.


What about confidentiality?

The Counseling Center staff abides by ethical standards and state and federal law. Any information that you discuss with your counselor is kept confidential and is not a part of your academic or health records. No information will be released to anyone without your written consent. Exceptions to the confidentiality policy include instances in which the client has been assessed to be a danger to self or others, information about elder abuse, child abuse or molestation, or a subpoena issued by a court of law.


How much does it cost?

Counseling services are provided at no cost to currently enrolled BPCC students.


Should I seek counseling services?

If you feel unsure about seeking counseling services, we hope you will make an appointment and discuss your concerns with a counselor. Counseling is a voluntary process and there is no obligation to continue.


What happens next?

During the first meeting with a counselor, you will fill out informational forms and discuss your concerns with a counselor. Together, the student and counselor will talk about the next steps for the student to pursue.


What should I do in case of an emergency?

Emergency situations include the following:

  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Thoughts and plans to harm yourself or someone else
  • You have a concern about the immediate safety and well being of yourself or someone else

During office hours, contact 318.678.6005 and ask to see a counselor immediately. After office hours, you should dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.


How do I see a counselor?

Visit or call the Counseling Center, which is located in Building F, Room 250, phone 318-678-6005, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
