The Atkins Family Scholarship Fund for Barksdale AFB Military Personnel

To honor the service, dedication, and sacrifice of members of the U.S. military stationed at Barksdale AFB, local businessman and entrepreneur, Mr. John Atkins (ATCO Investments) and the Atkins family have established the Atkins Family Scholarship Fund for Barksdale AFB Military Personnel at Bossier Parish Community College. Through this multi-year commitment, the family seeks to ensure access is granted to members of the military by removing financial barriers as they pursue academic degrees and/or industry certifications.

Further, the Atkins Family Scholarship Fund will allow active duty service men and women who experience deployment, the flexibility of resuming their education and reactivating their funding upon return to Barksdale. Through this fund, spouses of active duty military may also be considered for assistance.

Criteria

  • Applicant must be active duty military based out of Barksdale AFB or a spouse of active duty personnel
  • Applicant must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an academic degree or credential bound program at BPCC
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours or meet the minimum required hours for certification course
  • Applicant must be enrolled or plan to enroll for classes during period for which they are seeking funding
  • Applicant must possess a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Applicant must provide proof of active duty military status (military I.D.)
  • Spouses applying for assistance must provide proof of marital status and proof of residence
  • Applicant must provide a letter stating the need for the assistance
  • Applicant must provide a completed scholarship application
  • Applicant may apply for assistance based on financial needs or merit (talent, performance, leadership, etc.). Additional information may be required for need-based applicants.

Award Levels, Review Process, Notification

$250 - $1,500 per student, per semester. Awards are disbursed after a review process by the scholarship review committee. The recipient will be notified of the award via contact information listed on the application.

Allowable Use of Awarded Funds

  • Scholarship may be used to cover tuition, fees, books, class-related technology, and/or to remove financial barriers which may hamper student’s ability attend school or remain in school
  • Awarded funds will be credited to student’s school account. Any unused portion may be refunded to the student after all school-related tuition and fees have been paid.
  • Recipients who are deployed during the course of their academic semester, may pause any un-used funds until he/she returns. Student may re-activate funding when they resume studies at BPCC.
  • Award may be used as gap funding until other veteran/military-related funding is received
  • Funding is non-transferrable to other institutions.

  • Members of the military using tuition assistance are required to have a TA Briefing through the local military installation.
