
Bossier Parish Community College’s Learning Center received the National Tutoring Association Program of the Year Award for a two year school. Luke Dowden, Director for the Center for Learning Assistance, proudly accepted the award on behalf of BPCC and the Learning Center’s staff and tutors (pictured above).
The Learning Center received a 2-year National program accreditation from the National Tutoring Association (NTA). This status recognizes The Learning Center’s operational commitment to using best practices in administering the Center, tutor training, and the tutoring process. As part of the accreditation process, Program Coordinator Donna Earley received her certification as an Advanced Level Tutor Trainer. Director Luke Dowden, Assistant Director April Ayers, TLC Lab Manager Sonny Bernard, and TLC Assistant Patrick Jolley received Basic Level Tutor Trainer certification.
Math Tutor Steve Kemp received certification as an Advanced Level Tutor. All other tutors received a basic tutor certification. Newly hired tutors are in the process of becoming certified through the NTA.
The Division of Developmental Services in partnership with the Division of Liberal Arts received a $5,000 grant from The Charles T. Beaird Foundation to provide the foundation work for starting a writing support services learning laboratory within The Learning Center at BPCC. Principal Investigators for the grant were Luke Dowden, Donna Earley, Holly French, and Ellen Hinton.
Math Tutor Steve Kemp was selected Tutor of the Year for outstanding service to students seeking tutoring in The Learning Center.”
Former tutor Keri Ashley has accepted a position as Tutor II, working with students recommended by the math department. Former tutor Laura Jones has accepted a position as a Program Assistant, serving students in the Writing Lab. Coach Pat Jolley also serves The Learning Center as an Assistant.
Special thanks to faculty who afforded their students an opportunity to learn about TLC through class tours. The Learning Center conducted a total of 51 class tours in fall 2008.

English, science, and math tutors were available to students during the February "Mobile TLC."
Thursday, April 17, 2008 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in front of Bldg. A. TLC will focus on resources available to high school students who are potential BPCC students.
The Learning Center recorded 13,769 visits for the Fall 2007 semester, an increase of 2,236 from the 11,533 visitors recorded for the Fall 2006 semester.
Professional and student staff from the Division of Developmental Services including The Learning Center tutors participated in an afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship at Mike Woods Park. The event was well attended with over 20 participants. Special thanks to Donna Earley, TLC Program Coordinator, for her continued efforts to coordinate semi-annual events for our staff.
