Communication & Performing Arts

Our programs provide a rich curriculum that helps students understand and appreciate the artistic and technical challenges of their specific areas of study. Course work, productions and field projects provide practical, hands-on application of the skills needed in communication and performing arts fields.

Upon completion, students will be able to transfer degree to another university or find employment in their field.


COMMUNICATION MEDIA

There are five concentrations in the Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media: Mass Communication, Sound and Music Recording, Graphic Design/Computer Animation, Photography, and Multimedia.

  • Mass Communication
    • In our TV studio, students produce live and prerecorded weekly programming that airs on Suddenlink Channel 12 (KCAV-TV). Each summer we produce a film for entry into various film festivals. Students get hands-on experience while they learn the movie-making process from pre-production through post-production.
  • Sound and Music Recording
    • Our faculty and staff are seasoned with real world experience to guide you through learning how to build a sound studio, record music, operate professional sound gear, and much more.
  • Graphic Design/Computer Animation
    • Students will gain an understanding of design technique and convention that can be applied in the workforce. Students will utilize tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite, Toon Boom, and Maya.
  • Photography
    • Develop technical skills and practical problem-solving for a career in professional photography or for personal enrichment.
  • Multimedia
    • Allows students with interests in all the areas of the Communication Media program to take classes from each to achieve a well-rounded communication education.

MUSIC

The Music Program offers an Associate of Arts in Performing Arts degree with concentrations in Music or Music Production and Technology, as well as a Certificate of Technical Studies in Music. BPCC is the only public college in the Shreveport/Bossier City metropolitan area to offer a music major degree.

  • Music
    • Provides students with formal music training and enhances their music performance skills through solo and ensemble performance in band, choir, and recitals.
  • Music Production and Technology
    • Emphasizes hands-on practice with recording programs alongside creative music studies. Topics of study include music theory, applied lessons, and studio production. This concentration will apply to careers such as audio technician, music producer, recording artist, and composer.

THEATRE

Designed for students seeking practical experience and course work in theatre. Upon completion, students will be able to transfer degree to a four-year theatre program or seek employment in the entertainment industry.

Students will learn in a high-tech theatre environment, utilizing state-of-the-art digital lighting and sound equipment. Our students are provided the skills and knowledge needed to work in the performance and/or technical area of theatre.

  • Acting and Directing
    • Theatre performance students are instructed in basic and advanced acting and/or directing and audition techniques, through a combination of coursework and practical onstage experience. Students will learn the skills necessary to compete in the fast-paced, self-driven world of live performance and film. Coursework includes acting, directing, voice for the stage, theatre dance, and stage combat.
  • Stage and Theatre Management
    • Successfully manage backstage and onstage activities surrounding the theatrical production. Gain valuable experience needed to fund, run, and promote a successful theatre.
  • Scenery and Lighting
    • Learn the technical aspects of theatre such as stagecraft, lighting, scene painting, properties, special effects, and scenic design with practical, hands-on application through coursework and school productions. Find jobs in local and regional theatres, movie productions, industrial shows, and church productions.
  • Costuming and Makeup
    • Students receive hands-on instruction in costume design, costume construction techniques and makeup application.
