Summer Pell Grants

Pell Grant eligible students can receive up to 150% of their scheduled Pell award each year. What does this mean for you? If you were a Pell eligible student in fall 2019 and/or spring 2020, you may qualify for a Pell Grant for summer 2020!

To be eligible for a summer Pell Grant, you must:

  • Have completed a 2019-2020 FAFSA
  • Be Pell Grant eligible
  • Enroll in summer classes
  • Enroll at least 6 credit hours
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
  • Have lifetime Pell Grant eligibility remaining

Important facts to note:

  • Many students use their full LOAN eligibility over the fall and spring semesters, leaving nothing available for summer. If possible, students should reserve some of their annual loan eligibility for summer.
  • Eligible students may receive up to three Pell awards in one academic year.
  • The maximum time frame that students may receive Federal Pell Grant (Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) is the equivalent of twelve full-time semesters or 600%. Summer Pell awards will apply towards this Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU). One full-time semester Pell award equals 50%.

Check your Lifetime Eligibility

View your Lifetime Eligibility Units (LEU) on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) website for students. You should access the Financial Aid Review page.

Minimum Credits for Summer Pell Grant

  • If you enrolled full-time (12+ credits) and received the full-time Pell Grant amount for fall 2018 and spring 2019, you must enroll at least half-time (6 credits) in summer classes to receive a summer Pell Grant.
  • If you enrolled part-time fall 2018 or spring 2019, there is no minimum credit requirement to receive a summer Pell Grant (unless required by your EFC). You can use the remainder of your annual Pell Grant amount during summer with no minimum credit requirement.

Awarding Begins in late April

If you are enrolled for summer classes, you will automatically be awarded Pell Grant funds for which you are eligible for summer. If you have remaining loan eligibility, the loans will be offered, as well.

Dropping, Withdrawing or Failing Classes

It is possible that you could owe money back for all or part of your Federal Pell Grant if you do not complete classes that you registered for in the summer. The amount you may owe will be calculated based on the drop date, the number of credits and the last day that you attended classes.

Pell Grant Amount Depends on Enrollment

Your summer Pell Grant amount will depend on the number of credits you are registered in, as well as your Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU). The Pell Grant amount will be adjusted just prior to the release (disbursement) of your aid based on your enrollment level. Enrollment levels are defined in the following manner:

  • 12+ credits = 100% of the semester Pell Grant amount
  • 9-11 credits = 75% of the semester Pell Grant amount
  • 6-8 credits = 50% of the semester Pell Grant amount

An Example Of How Year-Round Pell (YRP) Works

A student with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $0 is eligible for $6195 in Pell grant for the year, or $3098 for the fall semester and $3097 for the spring semester.

Under the YRP program, this student could receive an additional $3098 for the summer semester if they enrolled full-time (12 credits) for both the fall and spring semesters AND enrolls full-time (12 credits) for the summer semester.

If the student, in this example, enrolls half-time (six credits) for the summer semester, the student would receive a $1549 Federal Pell Grant award for summer, or one-half of a full award.

Changes to Federal Student Aid Programs

Year-Round Pell Grants:
Summer Pell Grants became available to students beginning July 1, 2017.

Year-round Pell allows students to receive up to 150 percent of a regular grant award over the course of the academic year so that they can continue taking classes in the summer and finish their degrees faster than they would otherwise.
