Academic Advising Center
Your roadmap from “I applied” to “I graduated.”
Academic advising is a partnership that supports your academic journey from application to graduation. At Bossier Parish Community College, advisors help you plan classes, stay on track, connect to campus resources, and avoid surprises that slow you down.
Whether you are brand new, transferring in, or almost done, advisors are here to help you make smart choices and keep moving forward. This page is your guide to understanding what academic advising is, what to expect, and how to get the most out of your experience.

Academic advising is more than choosing classes. It is a collaborative relationship that helps you:
- Clarify your academic and career goals
- Understand your degree requirements and college policies
- Plan your coursework strategically
- Use Degree Works to track progress toward graduation
- Plan for transfer to a four-year university
- Understand how course choices may impact financial aid
- Navigate challenges and find support
Your academic advisor is a key partner in your success, offering guidance, resources, and a listening ear throughout your time at BPCC.
Your academic advisor will:
- Be accessible during business hours and responsive (within 24-48 hours)
- Know curriculum, degree requirements, and college policies
- Help you clarify and reach your academic and career goals
- Partner with you in planning a course schedule that aligns with your goals, interests, and responsibilities
- Refer you to campus services and resources when needed
- Respect your privacy and share information only with relevant professionals when it directly supports your best interests.
- Support you as you take ownership of your academic decisions.
Students are expected to be full participants in academic advising and thus to be both prepared for and engaged in the advising experience. The academic landscape can change, and while advisors provide guidance, students are responsible for understanding degree requirements and college policies related to their academic progress.
- Attend your academic advising appointment on time
- Check Degree Works for completed and remaining requirements
- Come prepared with questions and course ideas
- Bring unofficial transcripts if you’re transferring and want to use previous credits
- Be honest about your goals, interests, and any challenges
- Follow up on advisor recommendations and referrals
- Stay in contact throughout the semester, not just during registration
- Take ownership of your academic path and progress
Before your academic advising appointment:
- Review your Degree Works audit
- Look up potential classes in LoLA (the student registration system)
- Check your registration eligibility and any holds
- Write down questions or concerns
- Reflect on how your current degree program and courses are going
During your meeting:
- Be open to discussing your academic and career goals
- Talk about accomplishments or obstacles you’re facing and possible resources
- Take notes and ask for clarification if anything is unclear
After your appointment:
- Register for classes
- Follow through on referrals or action steps
- Reach out with any follow-up questions
- Work with your academic advisor to adjust your plan if needed
- Check for course equivalencies
- Submitting transcripts from another institution is not required. However, if you plan to use prior credits from a previous institution, please have an unofficial copy of your transcript available for your advising appointment.
- Use the Override Request form for permission to register into a BPCC course where the course prerequisite was met at another institution.
If you're taking classes at BPCC but attend another college, here’s how to register — especially if a course requires a prerequisite.
- If the course needs a prerequisite:
- Fill out the Override Request Form.
- Complete one form for each course you're trying to register for.
- If you're approved, you’ll get an email letting you know you can sign up.
- Not sure if your past courses meet the requirement?
- Check the Course Equivalency Guide to find out.
- If the course doesn’t have a prerequisite or placement score:
- Once you have met all the admission requirements, you should be able to register right away — no extra steps needed.
Check your BPCC email regularly to receive important information. When emailing your academic advisor or other BPCC Faculty & Staff:
- Use your BPCC email account
- Include a clear subject line (e.g., “Course registration question”)
- Conclude your email with your full name and BPCC ID number (e.g., “Thank you, First Name, Last Name, LXXXXXXXX”)
- Be clear, concise, and specific in your communication
- Allow 1–2 business days for a response before following up
- ConexEd – Schedule advising appointments and view advisor notes
- DegreeWorks – Track progress toward graduation (accessed through LOLA)
- LOLA – Register for classes, view holds, change major, check financial aid, make payments, and update student information
- BPCC Catalog – Explore academic programs and college policies
- BPCC Student Handbook – Understand student rights and responsibilities
