In its efforts to promote student success and mastery of written communication skills, Bossier Parish Community College offers developmental English courses as well as composition and literature courses. The College’s developmental English courses consist of instruction in two areas: ENGL 098 Fundamentals of Grammar and ENGL 099 Fundamentals of Composition. Satisfactory completion of these courses prepares students for ENGL 101 Composition and Rhetoric I, which is a requirement of all associate degree programs at the College and may transfer to a four-year university depending upon the receiving university’s curricular requirements and transfer policies. Many degree programs also require ENGL 102 Composition and Rhetoric II offered by the College as a General Education component, and enrollment in that course is based upon satisfactory completion of ENGL 101.
In addition to developmental English courses, ENGL 101, and ENGL 102, the College also offers sophomore-level literary studies in the following courses:
- ENGL 201: Major British Writers
- ENGL 202: Major American Writers
- ENGL 250: Intro to Women’s Literature
- ENGL 251: Intro to World Literature
- ENGL 252: Intro to Folklore & Mythology
- ENGL 255: Introduction to Fiction
- ENGL 256: Drama and Poetry
- ENGL 257: Intro to African-American Lit
These courses may transfer to public four-year institutions, depending upon curricular requirements at the four-year college and transfer polices. Students should check with their academic advisors to determine which English electives will transfer to the baccalaureate degree institution.
Also, the College offers ENGL 290 which focuses on advanced development of writing skills through creating literary and nonliterary works of various genres.
Students are encouraged to take the placement test to determine which, if any, developmental English courses they may need to help them succeed in pursuing their studies at Bossier Parish Community College. Students who have taken the ACT or the BPCC placement test may place in English courses higher than ENGL 098. Without placement scores, students will begin their studies in ENGL 098.
Students are urged to contact their academic advisors to address specific issues.
