RE: COVID-19 Update
Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards took additional measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Louisiana. These new measures include further limiting the size of gatherings, closing casinos, bars and movie theaters, and limiting restaurants to delivery, take out and drive-through orders only. These changes are effective statewide at midnight, tonight. Operations may be able to resume on April 13, however, the situation will be reevaluated seven days prior. Relatedly, President Trump also announced this afternoon that group meetings should be no larger than 10.
Based on this additional direction from federal and state leaders, and new additional guidelines from the CDC, we are shifting our strategy away from online instruction with limited face-to-face coursework to 100% online instruction and 100% remote work for faculty and staff until further notice. This begins with the move of our face-to-face meetings scheduled for tomorrow to Zoom videoconferencing. The Executive Council will meet tomorrow at 8:30am and the Dean’s Council will meet at 10:30am. You will receive notice from your Division leader when they’ve scheduled those meetings and the Zoom meeting has been set up.
For the week of this extended Spring Break, faculty and staff are encouraged to work remotely to prepare for the return of students to their online classes March 23. If you desire to return to your office to collect work resources essential to successfully working remotely, please consult with your Supervisor. Sandra Harvey (firstname.lastname@example.org) is managing these visits to ensure that we maintain compliance with the 10-person rule and she will provide a self-screening protocol you will be expected to follow.
The situation is changing rapidly. There is a small group of campus leaders working on how to address ongoing campus procedures during this crisis. We are monitoring the situation closely and we will re-evaluate the situation on a weekly basis. I will continue to communicate via Campus Memo and on the website as decisions are made.
Folks, this is an unprecedented crisis situation. Never in our history nor in the history of LCTCS have we faced a situation like this crisis. I want to assure you that we are taking into account the safety of our campus community when decisions are made. This is our top priority. We want to make sure that our students have every available opportunity to continue their studies to every extent possible. I ask for your continued flexibility and adaptability for this in and of itself is a lesson for us all
(March 13, 2020) The decision outlined below has been made in light of the Governor’s Executive Order today, direction provided by LCTCS, and guidance from the Louisiana Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The college will be closed on Monday, March 16 for faculty, staff, and students. A schedule will be provided for a return to work by essential personnel beginning Tuesday, March 17 and the college will resume operations Wednesday, March 18.
BPCC will extend Spring Break for students through Friday, March 20. This will provide faculty and staff with time to finalize preparations to move most instruction to online delivery effective Monday, March 23 through the end of the semester. The need for limited in-person instruction will be determined by faculty and deans. Students in clinical placements, internships, and apprenticeships will be addressed on a program-by-program basis with the appropriate faculty and Dean who will identify alternative learning opportunities as may be required.
No known novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have been diagnosed in Bossier Parish or at BPCC. Nonetheless, the college is enacting new policies, practices, and procedures to enhance the safety and well-being of faculty, staff, and students, and the broader community while also striving to preserve our core mission. Our facilities and custodial staff have used the week of Spring Break to engage in intensive efforts to disinfect and sanitize all surfaces and have developed a protocol for regular cleaning of high traffic areas; these efforts will continue and additional cleaning staff has been secured to promote a healthy and safe work environment.
Our mission commits us to the creation of caring learning environments and we will maintain this commitment during this challenging time. Student, faculty, and staff welfare is always our highest priority. We will continue to update you on this evolving situation. Thank you for your commitment to #TheBPCCWay and the service to our students and one another as we address these unprecedented challenges.
Please continue to monitor information and news releases on the college’s website: https://www.bpcc.edu/index.php/coronavirus-faq/.
